This slender volume contains the Toppan Prize Essay for 1883, which was awarded by Harvard University to Edward Channing, Instructor in History in Harvard College. Dr. Channing's prize-winning essay was read before the Historical and Political Science Association of the Johns Hopkins University, February 22, 1884.
